Winter wrap – September 2014

Wow if we ever thought winter was going to a quite time, we were wrong. Welcome back after a busy winters action both in New Zealand and around the world.

Cycling:

Joining 17 New Zealanders at the World amateur cycling championships Sharon Prutton went over a won two impressive sliver medals from the Time Trial and Road race. She was also the only NZ rider to win a medal.

At this years two day junior Cuddon tour Marc took 5 riders from Rangi ruru girls school up for the popular event in Blenheim. Rose Marshall-Lee won three out of the four stages taking the yellow jersey away in the U17 girls. Ava Morrow placed forth in the U15 girls taking third in the final road stage. Tessa Jenkins won the sprint jersey and took second overall in the U20 girls with Brooke Hudson third. And Chloe and Millie Mannering had some solid stages and riders.

Anton Mulder, Campbell Pithie, Brooke Hudson and Rose Marshall-Lee went down to compete in the 2 day Timaru tour. Raced over 5 stages all riders performed well in their respective grades with Campbell winning stage 4 from a late stage solo effort, Brooke winning Stage 5 in a similar fashion and Rose winning the overall U17 girl grade with several wins.

Schools racing being a winter sport is in full swing with the National schools championships fast approaching in late September. At the recent North Island champs held in Cambridge combining both road and Track events, after some time away from the bike Ione Johnson placed 3rd in the Points race.

At the South Island champs Rose Marshall-Lee won the U17 Time Trial

Ava Morrow won her Time Trial and placed second in her road race.

The Rangi Ruru girls senior team won the girls title for third consecutive year.

Round four of the six race Benchmark homes elite series was held in Ashburton and Sahrlotte Lucas racked up some more series points placing third in the elite womans race.

Adventure racing:

Glen Currie and his team NZ team adventure raced the WuLong mountain quest in China. Over the four days racing the team well cleaned up the competition winning 3 of the days racing over some tough international competitors.

Triathlon / Duathlon:

After winning all the local events over the winter, Sam Bell went up to the New Zealand Duathalon national championships in Taupo full of good form and confidence. In some tough gusty coditions Sam took the sliver medal in the U23 mens race. Aweome effort for a guy only one year into the sport.
